Rejoice, bomber fans, your tiny hero has surfaced on the Genesis at last, and he won't disappoint you. New levels, new enemies, and plenty of other new touches make this game one of the best bombers ever.
Bombs Away!
Just when you thought the original Bomberman concept was exhausted, Sega revitalized the explosive little guy with great new adventures for his Genesis debut. In the one-player Standard game, you scurry around odd-shaped fields, laying bombs to destroy weird new critters and big bosses while trying to reach the exits before time runs out. Like Super Bomberman 2 on the SNES, which also introduced new action/adventure levels, these new Genesis levels invigorate the basic Bomberman concept, which is almost five years old.
In addition, you can also challenge up to three other friends in the traditional Battle, which presents the familiar grids, hides recognizable power-ups like Multibombs and the Kicker, and requires traditional Bomberman strategies. You also get a power-up that's not in the original game: animals that you ride like Star Wars Taun-Tauns! These touches, coupled with the classic head-to-head (-to-head-to-head) action, should once again make Bomberman a party favorite.
ProTip: Take out this banana boss by bombing his monkey and then setting a comer trap. Be careful -- a single touch from either enemy will do you in!
Super Bomber Sights
The graphics and sounds are... well, they're Bomberman, so you know what to expect. The man himself and most enemies are still small, stiffly moving, Japanese-style characters, and the backgrounds are about average for 16-bit games.
The familiar theme music permeates the Battle mode, but thankfully new tunes highlight the Standard action. More sound effects (like voices or enemy noises) would've really added texture to the game.
Mega Hard but Fun
Just because this game looks simple, you shouldn't expect simple game play -- it's the hardest B-Man yet. You'll be surprised by the trickiness of the Standard levels, and with no difficulty select and a variety of special bombers to choose from in Battle mode, it's every Bomberman for himself. With a little practice, though, you'll master these easy controls and turn into a bombin' fool. This is one addicting Bomber, man.
- On the Hi-Speed Field, your bomber is so quick that the biggest danger is accidentally blowing yourself up.
- Your bomber travels slower through water, so give yourself more time to reach safety on this wet field.
- With the fiery power-up, the explosions extend completely across the field, so retreat farther than usual to find safety.
- Bridges are safe areas so lay bombs right next to them and jump onto the bridge for protection.
- Your bomber is much quicker than the walking, crawling enemies around you, so use your speed to surround enemies with bombs.

Get ready Genesis owners as video gamedom's favorite arsonist is now setting its bombs for the Sega system. Mega Bomberman explodes onto the Genesis with an all-new adventure, new stages, awesome power-ups and get this--he can now uncover eggs that hatch kangaroo-type animals! Each individual animal possesses different abilities from the rest. Some can kick bombs over walls, some can jump straight up to avoid an explosion and some can speed across the screen as well. Two modes can be played: Normal Game and Battle Game. The Normal Game is an adventure where Bomberman must go through five areas to save the world. The Battle Game is where you bomb it out with three of your buddies!
THE GOOD
Cool new levels! Awesome power-ups! Tag team! Animals you can ride! A great party game!
THE BAD
Mega Bomberman is a superb game in many respects. The only downfall here is a severe case of slowdown!
THE UGLY
The third Boss gets real unsightly when you bomb its shell off. Feel like seafood tonight?
People say:
This game surprised me, simply because how good it looked. Mega Bomberman suffers a bit from the control, but it does let you play with the latest assortment of Items and power-ups. Bomberman is a fun game in itself, and its levels are larger and more complex. Bomber-men will either love it or hate it. If you don't own the Super NES versions of BM. this would be worth picking up.
Not bad, but not great either. It's not different enough from the Super NES version to make it a 'Mega' game. The animals Bomberman can ride upon add some flair, but it just isn't enough. Maybe I'm being hard on this one because I blew through the Super NES version. I really hoped that this one would truly improve upon the game, but it doesn't. For party games, it's still decent.
Bomberman is one of my all-time favorite video game characters. Although it's nice to finally play him on the Genesis, it's hard to get excited over this game because it's pretty much the same thing. Granted, there are lots of new levels and the ability to ride animals is cool, but it's just not original enough. That's not to say this is a bad game. I like Mega Bomberman. It's just an average game.
The whole Bomberman series has had an excellent addition of new techniques and levels. This one is no exception. Sure, it is the same game, but it is a good game with some of the best and most addicting game play yet. The addition of a few power-ups and the cute animal to ride make it fresh enough to keep you playing this sequel. Unlike some other sequels, I just can't get tired of this one.

Game features:Single game mode
One of the most popular, and explosive, videogame characters makes his way to the Sega Genesis in the form of Mega Bomberman. You can either play by yourself or with up to three friends by using Sega's Team Player. In the single-player game, you've got to work your way through a series of mazes, dropping bombs on enemies as you go, and trying to reach the end within the time limit. If you opt for the Battle mode, you and your friends will engage in a dynamite-induced state of explosive action, as you try to be the last man standing. Get ready to have a blast as you try to blow your friends, and enemies, into oblivion with Mega Bomberman.
Bomb the other guy and take his stuff. This is the ingeniously simple premise for Mega Bomberman from Sega. Considered one of the best multiplayer games of all time, this explosive one- to four-player title is now available for your Genesis. Just wander around leaving bombs behind, unveiling goodies, collecting power-ups, and blasting the other little bombers to oblivion. Toast them before you eat a flame pill, and you win. Sounds easy? Yeah, right Invite three other players to join you. This title causes riots (and tournaments).
Riding a Louie
Yes, Mega Bomberman is also a one-player game. In Normal mode you go through five levels, blasting blocks, flaming enemies, collecting puzzle pieces, and bombing bosses. In single or multiplayer Battle mode, you get your choice of ten stages with gizmos from conveyor belts that transport your bombs to missile-firing penguins. Through all of this, if you hop on an egg, you pick up a Louie. There are five types of Louie to ride, each protecting you from a single explosion. Whether you go multiplayer or play by yourself, Mega Bomberman is going to live in your Genesis. It isn't just habit forming; it's a blast.
Tips for One Player:
- Open all-the soft blocks before leaving an area. There's often stuff you'll need.
- Get the Remote Control. Being able to detonate bombs at will makes this tough game much easier.
- Think before you bomb. If you are about to open an area and let an enemy out, figure out how to kill it quickly before bombing.
Multiplayer tips:
- Work away from other bombers and quickly collect as many power-ups as you can.
- Always bomb the skulls.
- Learn to use each of your stages and power-ups against the other bombers. Come out kicking, multi-bombing, riding your Louie and using his talent, and doing things like dropping piles of bombs-down trapdoors.
